How do I submit a film?
All submissions are made through our FilmFreeway page. Create a FilmFreeway account, choose your category, and follow the prompts to submit your film and promotional poster.
Can I submit through the website?
No. All film submissions must be made through FilmFreeway. Submissions sent through the website, email, or any other method will not be accepted.
Does my film need to be entirely AI-generated?
No. Films must incorporate AI-generated elements, but they are not required to be 100% AI-generated. Live-action footage, animation, and archival material are all permitted alongside AI content.
Can I use live-action footage?
Yes. Live-action footage is welcome as long as your film also incorporates AI-generated elements.
Can I use archival footage?
Yes, provided you hold the necessary rights and permissions for all archival material used.
Are international submissions accepted?
Yes. MAIFF is open to filmmakers worldwide, aged 18 and above. International Narrative, Documentary, and Animation categories are dedicated to creators outside Australia.
Do non-English films need English subtitles?
Yes. Films in languages other than English must include English subtitles.
Can I submit more than one film?
Yes. There is no limit to the number of films you may submit — each film is counted as a separate entry.
Are previously screened films eligible?
Yes. Works previously screened at other festivals are eligible, and world premieres are not required. Films must have been completed no earlier than October 2024.
What materials do I need to submit?
The final version of your film with full credits, plus a promotional poster. Both are submitted through FilmFreeway.
Is the festival online or in person?
The festival is scheduled to take place in person. Final confirmations and detailed scheduling will be announced on our website shortly.
How will selected filmmakers be notified?
Selected filmmakers will be notified via FilmFreeway on 17 October 2026, and selections will be announced on this website and our social channels.
